Yobe varsity clarifies viral photo of students sleeping outdoors.
Yobe varsity clarifies viral image of students sleeping outdoors, cites ongoing hostel renovations The management of Yobe State University has addressed concerns about a viral image showing some students sleeping outside within the institution’s premises, explaining that the situation is temporary and linked to ongoing accommodation upgrades. The photograph, which gained traction across social media platforms, sparked reactions suggesting a shortage of hostel facilities in the university. However, the institution has clarified that the image, though genuine, does not represent the overall state of student accommodation on campus. In a statement shared on Wednesday by Hon. Yusuf Ali, the Focal Person for Digital and Strategic Communications to Governor Mai Mala Buni, the university management explained that several hostels are currently undergoing renovation and upgrading. According to the statement, the refurbishment projects have temporarily reduced the number of available bed spaces, leading to short-term adjustments in student housing arrangements. It added that the prevailing heat conditions have also influenced some students’ decisions to stay outdoors at night. Further details from the university indicated that efforts are ongoing to resolve the situation. The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, confirmed that hostel allocation processes are in progress, with priority given to students affected by the temporary shortage. Measures are also being implemented to ease congestion in high-demand hostels, including the Abuja Hostel. The institution reassured students, parents, and the general public that no student has been left without support, emphasizing that steps are being taken to ensure all students are provided with safe and adequate accommodation as soon as possible.
